THE ARMIDALE Rams under 16s have finished the Group 19 season as undefeated premiers after knocking over Inverell West in Saturday’s grand final in Glen Innes.
Coach Glenn Witherdin said it wasn’t an easy win but there wasn’t a time he thought his boys would walk away as anything but the premiers.
“It wasn’t a walkover but we were ahead all the time,” he said.
It was a wet game and the young Rams were in their element - they went out strong and got three tries taking a 14-0 lead, then finished up 24-16 at the siren.
“The boys played very well, they played as a team and they played to the game plan,” Witherdin said.
He was ecstatic with the result and said the season started out with a fair few blokes just giving it a go but it had ended with nothing but victory.
“I don’t think you’d get a much better side,” he said.
“The keenness was the thing - they were keen to learn and they listened.”
Rams halfback Josh Croft had a blinder - Witherdin said he directed the side around the paddock and had a great kicking game.
Five-eight Alexander Frost also performed well as did forward Will Whale.
However, Witherdin said all the boys stepped up and ‘played as a team’.
“They all played well and it wasn’t an easy game at all but, to me, they didn’t ever look like they were going to lose,” he said.
Witherdin is now looking at next year and he plans to take on the coaching role again.
He said most of the players would be on board next year as well.
“Half a dozen are going in to the under 18s and some will leave but most of the side will stay for next year,” he said.
“We’re hoping to build for next year.”
Witherdin congratulated all his troops for their stellar performances throughout the year.
Many of the players have the opportunity to play in representative teams - some players are headed for the NSW Rugby League Academy squad and centre Jeremy Munro is travelling to Newcastle later in the month for trials with the Knights under 16s.
Witherdin said they’re a great bunch of kids and now ‘they’re pretty happy themselves too’.
