STUDENTS from four high schools - Armidale High, Duval, O’Connor Catholic College and Yass in the Southern Highlands presented a high quality field of weightlifters on September 19, all vying for the prestigious perpetual trophy at the 16th inter-school bench press tournament held at Armidale High.
Congratulations go to all the lifters for their fine performances, and particularly Duval’s Carl Hardman and Yass’s Barry Anderson and Phillip Skillin who all broke records at this year’s event.
The three record-breakers came first in their divisions - Hardman in the 59kg with a lift of 86.5kg, Anderson in the 54kg with a lift of 86kg and Skillin in the 108kg division with a lift of 115kg.
There were many credible achievements with Armidale High’s Michael Lush, Michael Snell and Corey Church from O’Connor, Hardman and Dylan Halloran from Duval and Anderson, Skillin and Tom Roche from Yass all lifting in excess of their own body weight - a high 30 per cent of the total competition field.
Female lifter of the meet went to Amy McClenaghan from Duval, who won the girls 54kg division with a lift of 40kg, while male lifter of the meet went to Anderson.
This award was calculated based on each lifter’s best lift expressed as a percentage against their bodyweight.
The Lifter Team trophy, averaging each lifter’s body weight to weight lifted ratio for their school went to Yass, with an average of 101.1 per cent.
Second was Duval with 96.4, while 96.4, third was O’Connor with 74.4 and fourth place went to Armidale High with 39.5 per cent.
The dip-bar and chin-up events were strongly contested following the main bench press event.
McClenaghan and Hardman came up trumps in the girls and boys dip-bar events respectively, while Hardman also took out the chin-up competition.
Organiser of the event, Paralympian and Commonwealth Games powerlifter Wayne Sharpe, said that the standard of technique and competition was very high.
“This was evident by long-standing inter-school records being broken this year as well as the large number of lifters lifting more than their own body weight,” he said.
The winner of the Wayne Sharpe inter-school bench press perpetual trophy for 2008 was O’Connor with 73 points, ahead of Yass with 67, Duval on 56 and Armidale High School with 13.
Under the points system, each entrant attracts points for their school simply by entering the event.
Further points are awarded to first, second and third placings in each division.
“I would like to congratulate all the lifters who participated in this year’s event and to thank all the schools for their continued support,” Sharpe said.
“It is a tribute to all that this event has completed its 16th year.”
Sharpe said he hoped to see all the competitors again at next year’s event, as well as thanking the coaches, officials and schools for their time and equipment.
