AN Armidale cricketing veteran has been selected to play for the NSW over 60s side in Melbourne later this year.
Graeme Andrews was selected after the state side played a local 11 in Tenterfield last year.
Alongside Andrews, three Tamworth players - Mike Cashman, Doug Truman and Doug Crowell - were also selected.
They will contest the over 60s championships from November 17-24, with a smattering of former Test stars, including Max Walker (pictured), set to turn out for their states.
The NSW side will commence their campaign with a trial match against an English veterans side on the Central Coast on November 13.
Andrews said it was the first time he had played at state level in a 50-year career.
“I’m looking forward to it,” he said.
“I was invited to play after our local veterans’ representative team played the state side last year.
“I used to do a lot of travelling around with my job and I always played first grade in the towns I’ve lived in.”
He said he was anticipating the championship to be a social occasion.
“When you’ve over 60 and still playing cricket there’s a fair bit of camaraderie about it,” he said.
“It’s serious but social.”
Andrews is also part of the local Golden Oldies competition, which is played every fortnight at Lambert Park.
Matches are held every second Sunday from midday, and anyone who is interested and aged over 45 is invited to have a run.
The next match will be played on October 26.
