ANYONE who thinks good coffee and great food can’t be found in regional NSW should think again - or take a trip to Armidale.
Caffiends On Marsh, a favourite café among Armidalians, was reviewed in the Sydney Morning Herald’s 2009 Good Food Guide.
The publication is considered a bible among the restaurant industry, so Caffiends owner Judy Donnelly was understandably thrilled about the review.
“We received a mention in 2007 and 2008 but this is the first time we have been fully reviewed,” Judy said.
“We’re obviously excited that the efforts we put into serving good coffee and fresh, well-presented food have been recognised, but it’s also great news for Armidale.
“I must sing the praises of our baristas, staff and in particular our chef Sarah McDonald, who is very particular, loves complementary flavours and always creates fresh, high quality food.”
Judy and her husband Neil left Brisbane 10 years ago to establish the café, choosing Armidale for its climate and facilities.
“It’s been a business that has relied on word of mouth and really grown along with our clientele, who have become more discerning with their tastes over the years,” said Judy.
Good Food Guide co-editor, Joanna Savill, said there has been an incredible growth in regional restaurants qualifying for inclusion in the guide.
“I am particularly amazed, given that the life of a restaurant owner in the current climate is not easy, that there has really been a lifting of quality across the board regionally,” Joanna said.
“Regional restaurants are really starting to understand the notion of quality food, quality service as well as the importance of reflecting where they are in terms of what they serve.
“It’s very gratifying to witness this trend.”
Northern Inland Regional Development Board executive officer Don Tydd said the review was a good accolade and proof that the regional market is becoming more sophisticated.
“It puts paid to the mythical concept that you can’t get a good coffee west of the ranges,” Mr Tydd said.
“The New England North West region is experiencing some tremendous growth in terms of its food and wine products at the moment.
“Having recently established its own wine region (New England), it is increasingly becoming better recognised as a source of quality wine and food products.”
